ending hunger, caring for the earth

Heifer International’s mission is to work with communities around the world to end hunger and poverty and to care for the earth.  The strategy is to “pass on the gift.”  As people share their animals’ offspring with others – along with their knowledge, resources and skills, an expanding network of hope, dignity and self-reliance is created.  Since 1944, Heifer’s grassroots approach has provided food and income-producing animals as well as training to millions of resource-poor families in 115 countries, on the theory that if you give a man a fish he can eat for a day, but if you give a man a fishing rod, he can eat every day.   The children of St. David’s Church School have been raising funds for over twenty years for Heifer International.  Parishioners are asked to purchase shares of different animals during an annual carnival-type event.  The funds are then sent to Heifer International and distributed for the purchase of animals.

WILLING HANDS

Willing Hands is a unique educational and work-activity center that serves the adult, developmentally disabled community of northern New Jersey.    Very few options exist for parents/guardians of the developmentally disabled community once their children/wards leave the public school system at age twenty-one. Willing Hands was founded by St. David’s in 1986 to meet the needs of these individuals.  Willing Hands continues to provide the developmentally disabled with opportunities to grow in their life, work and social skills.  Willing Hands is housed at St. David’s and is strongly supported by the St. David’s community.  Members of St. David’s serve on the Willing Hands Board of Directors and many parishioners work with the developmentally disabled as volunteers as well as provide both moral and financial support.
